Spectroscopic observations of the T Tauri-like variable S CrA have been obtained. The spectrograms show a rich emission and absorption line spectrum. Most spectral lines have YY Orionis (or 'inverse P Cygni') line profiles. The absorption components of the emission lines and all pure absorption lines are strongly red-shifted, indicating a maximum recession velocity of about 400 km/s. Those emission lines which have no absorption components show no measurable line shift. The other emission lines are apparently blue-shifted by absorption in their red wings. Although the strength of the stronger absorption lines and the continuum shortward of the Balmer limit are highly variable with time, no time variation of the absorption-line redshift could be detected. The observed spectral properties can be explained by the assumption that S CrA is a protostar of about 1.7 solar masses in the final stage of its hydrodynamic evolution.
