After introductory and historical remarks on C. F. Gauss' first measurement of the absolute value of magnetic intensity, this conference on the structure, evolution and magnetic field of the earth's core turns to the seismological evidence obtained to date, the phase diagram of iron, shock wave data constraints on core composition, core-mantle boundary inhomogeneities, paleomagnetic and archeomagnetic investigations of geomagnetic secular variations, the Gauss-Matuyama and Brunhes-Matuyama polarity transitions, Cretaceous and Jurassic geomagnetic polarity, geomagnetic reversal models, and geomagnetic excursions. Also discussed are the modeling of the core magnetic field, the spectral analysis of the paleomagnetic time series and the geomagnetic spectrum, and such topics in the geophysical interpretations of the data as kinematic and dynamic models in dynamo theory and the geomagnetic and gravitational evidence for bumps on the core-mantle boundary.
