Line-profile symmetry types for H2-He-complex rotovibrational collision-induced absorption (RVCIA) spectra are investigated theoretically, with a focus on the dependence of intermolecular action potentials on the vibrational coordinates of the molecules. The theoretical basis of the computations is explored in detail, and the results are presented in graphs. Commonly used model profiles are shown to have a symmetry inconsistent with that of the RVCIA profiles, and simple procedures are given for constructing model profiles with the proper symmetry. The importance of this finding for studies of the high-temperature vibrational CIA bands typical of stellar atmospheres is indicated.
