Rooftop Variables (RV) is a NASA-supported outreach program that teams Columbia University (CU) graduate students with New York City public school teachers. RV aims to increase student exposure to astronomy by using participation in research programs as a motivator for both teachers and students. During their first year in RV, teachers are trained to use a 6'' telescope equipped with a 1.4 megapixel CCD camera to take and reduce photometric data. In their second year, the teachers are loaned the same equipment and start astronomy clubs at their schools with the assistance of the CU graduate students; these clubs are intended to involve students in observational programs. RV data have already contributed to campaigns to determine the flare frequency distribution on inactive early M-dwarfs, which requires dozens of hours of monitoring in short intervals. The RV data will be combined with data from several other telescopes measuring active and later-type stars. Here we discuss our teacher recruitment and training and provide some sample data obtained from the West Harlem Observatory (WHO), one of the most light-polluted locations in the world.
Support for this work was provided by NASA through Chandra Award Number GO8-9012X issued by the Chandra X-ray Observatory Center.
