Riometer observations made on June 16, 1986 of single-hop whistlers at Sanae (Antarctica) were often followed by diffused echo whistlers about 6 sec later. Detailed analysis of the riometer and VLF radio waves recordings disclosed a correlation between the arrival times of the single-hop whistlers and riometer absorptions, with an absorption maximum on the average of 0.04 dB, with a lag of 3 +/-2 sec relative to the arrival of whistlers. The correlation is evaluated by calculating the energy spectrum of electrons precipitated into the atmosphere by gyroresonance interaction of whistler mode waves with radiation belt electrons, using the result of the computer-simulated test particle program of Chang and Inan (1985). The temporal variation of the electron density in the upper atmosphere due to the whistler-induced electron-precipitation is derived as a function of altitude, taking into account electron-ion production and recombination rates.
