Pitch angle scattering by irregularities in the coronal magnetic field has been proposed to account for the diffusive coronal transport which apparently delays the arrival times at the earth of solar cosmic rays. However, the observed delays, the lack of significant particle loss to the chromosphere during long-distance propagation, and the rigidity independence of the coronal portion of the propagation of electrons combine to suggest that the pitch angle scattering mechanism cannot be supported. An alternative mechanism involving the transfer of particles between adjacent flux tubes by field line reconnection due to field rearrangement in the supergranulation network is presented.
