Recent estimates of oceanic and global heat flow from the earth's interior are reviewed. Measurements of heat fluxes through the sea floor are discussed in relation to the dependence of heat flux on the time since lithosphere formation at a ridge and the nature of lithospheric cooling, and it is shown that the uniform half-space model of lithosphere is the only model which adequately represents the reliable heat flow data at present. Examination of estimates of total global heat flow reveals them to be in general agreement when allowances are made for the 25% of the total global heat flow believed to be represented by hydrothermal transport in young oceanic crust. A total global heat flow of 4.1 + or - 0.4 x 10 to the 13th W is thus obtained, corresponding to an average flux of 80 + or - 8 mW/sq m, with average oceanic heat flux greater than average continental heat flux by about 70%. The possibility of variations in heat flow over the past 100 million years is noted.
