The Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE) procedure is applied to study November 2004 geomagnetic storm, particularly the period of 2000-2400UT on November 9th. During this time interval, IMF Bz was strongly northward while the solar wind pressure was relatively high, a favorable condition for forming reversed plasma convection in the polar regions. Indeed, the AMIE results show strong reversed convections for a long period (more than 1 hour) in both hemispheres, which have rarely been observed. To understand the physical mechanism, numerical simulations of the magnetospheric dynamics are carried out using the Lyon- Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) MHD model. The impact on the thermospheric neutral wind and density is also examined using the NCAR-TIEGCM, and the simulated results will be compared with the CHAMP satellite observations.
