The spectra of spicules observed simultaneously in the K and D3 lines were studied as a function of time and altitude. The spicules could be classified into two groups: those with wide profile and those with narrow profile. There are about twice as many spicules with wide profile than with narrow profile. The half-width data were used to determine microturbulence in the spicules as a function of height. The fundamental physical parameter distinguishing the two groups of spicules is the ratio between the core of the magnetic field inside the spicule and the diameter of the ascending column of material.
