Multiphoton Ionization And Excitation To Highly Excited States

Scientific paper

In the spectra of planetary states of atoms the resonances can become so dense as to be unresolvable with traditional methods. This may even be true when high resolution laser excitation is used. Resonant multiphoton laser excitation, however, introduces an ``artificial'' amplitude modulation in a dense spectrum of planetary resonances, which may serve as a sensitive indicator of the internal dynamics. Here we present new experimental and theoretical results which confirm our earlier postulation of this effect.
