The strong Fourth Positive Band System of carbon monoxide absorbs solar radiation between 1060A and 1544A. At low pressures where collisional deactivation is improbable, the absorbed radiation is emitted isotropically in the same band system. Absorbed radiation is emitted either at the same frequency (resonant scattering), or is absorbed in one band and emitted in a second at a different frequency (resonant-fluorescent scattering). The process occurs in sunlet rocket exhausts at high altitudes if the exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide. The process is also important in the production of the vacuum ultraviolet dayglow of planets whose atmospheres contain carbon monoxide. The general scattering equations are developed, and are then applied to carbon monoxide. Emission intensities for all bands of the Fourth Positive System are calculated as functions of temperature and number density.
