A theoretical study of standing Alfven wave resonance excitation by a monochromatic fast magnetosound in an axisymmetric model of the magnetosphere is presented. A theory is developed which includes the Alfven and magnetosound wave relationship, transverse and longitudinal inhomogeneities of the medium, the weak transverse dispersion of Alfven waves, and their dissipation in the ionosphere. General formulas which describe the spatial structure of a monochromatic Alfven wave are derived. In addition, the excitation (in an axisymmetric magnetosphere) of standing Alfven waves by nonstationary fast magnetosound with a board spectrum of frequencies is studied theoretically. Formulas describing the space-time behavior of the Alfven waves are obtained. The important case of stochastic oscillations is considered, and examples are given which may be useful in the modeling of Pi2, SSC, and Pc3 phenomena.
