A theoretical study is made of the excitation-in an axisymmetric magnetosphere-of standing Alfvén waves by a nonstationary fast magnetosound which has a broad spectrum of frequencies. We have obtained formulae describing the space-and-time behaviour of Alfvén waves. An analysis is made of the role of a weak transverse dispersion of Alfvén waves and of their damping in the ionosphere. Particular emphasis is given to the important case of stochastic oscillations. Some examples are considered, which may be useful for modelling of Pi2, SSC and Pc3 phenomena.
