A theory is developed for the anomalous absorption of an ordinary sounding wave in its passage through a region of the ionosphere disturbed by intense radio emission at a frequency close to the electron gyrofrequency. The transformation of ordinary to extraordinary waves at electron density inhomogeneities considerably extended along the magnetic field, whose scale is comparable to the sounding wavelength, is examined.
