Lassen's (1927) dispersion equation for electromagnetic waves propagating in the ionospheric plasma is discussed and compared with those of Appleton (1928) and Hartree (1929, 1931). It is shown that Lassen's equation is more general than Appleton's because it includes collisional absorption in the limiting case of small collision frequencies and can be generalized to take account of strong absorption as well as the motion of ions. It is also noted that Lassen's formula correctly neglects the 'Lorentz polarization' term erroneously introduced by Hartree and later adopted by Appleton.
