We apply the Sinai-Ruell-Bowen theory of the thermodynamic formalism to a two-dimensional invertible map S of the unit square arising as an approximate Poincaré map of the mixmaster universe. The relaxation properties of the dynamical system defined by S are thereby related to correlation properties of a one-dimensional lattice spin system where the spin variable can take values in the set N of natural numbers. The spectrum of the transfer operator of this spin system determines the relaxation time of the map S.
