An investigation is conducted of several radiation mechanisms in relativistic thermal plasmas. Conditions for thermal equilibrium are considered, taking into account situations in which the electrons and positrons are ultrarelativistic and nondegenerate. An approximate treatment of Comptonized bremsstrahlung is discussed, giving attention to bremsstrahlung emission and absorption, aspects of scattering kinematics, saturated Comptonization, unsaturated Comptonization, the escape probabilities, and results for the Comptonized spectra and energy amplification. A study is conducted of double Compton scattering by relativistic thermal electrons. Double Compton emission and absorption are considered along with relations between double Compton and bremsstrahlung, and a comparison of double Compton and pair production. A description is presented of an analytic approximation to annihilation radiation.
