Evidence for a close association between type III-V solar radio bursts and impulsive hard X-ray bursts is presented. Examination of radio spectral records obtained during all reported impulsive hard X-ray bursts reveals that in 80% of the cases where there were associated radio events, the event was a type III group containing a type V burst. Altogether some 30 type III-V bursts are found to be associated with hard X-ray and microwave events. A typical example of a hard-X-ray-associated type III-V burst is discussed. It is estimated that about 0.1% to 1% of the fast electrons accelerated in the impulsive phase of the related flare and injected into the lower corona appear to have escaped to heights of at least 0.1 solar radius above the photosphere and excited the type III-V burst.
