Magnetospheric substorms occurred during major tail conjunctions of the THEMIS spacecraft are studied to seek insights on substorm onset mechanism. We investigated observational substorm features of plasma properties, disturbances detected by THEMIS satellites, and auroral substorm evolution observed by THEMIS all-sky-imagers. Pi 2 perturbations prior to current disruption can be identified in the magnetic fluctuations based on the analysis results of THEMIS satellites observations. The occurrence of substorm onset-associated Pi 2 waves/instabilities (40-150 second wave period) in the late growth phase would accelerate electrons from the magnetosphere into the ionosphere to produce substorm auroral arcs with brightening azimuthal structure along the arc, which eventually breaks up. In this study, we will provide explanation of the relationship between the activation of auroral substorm and wave activity leading to current disruption and dipolarization in terms of the kinetic ballooning instability. We propose that the kinetic ballooning instability is excited in the near-Earth plasma sheet and grows into large amplitude to cause the current disruption onset. The theory of kinetic ballooning instability is able to explain the key features of substorm onset, including Pi 2 wave, arc formation, intensification, and arc breakup.
