The scattering matrix S of the eigenmode amplitudes of an electromagnetic field is shown to be related to the scattering matrix S(bar) of the adjoint field as S exp -1 = S(bar) exp T. For cold magnetoplasmas the (artificial) adjoint field is mapped into a physical 'conjugate' field in the given medium with scattering matrix S(c) = S(bar) exp -1.
