Recent observations in both the field and the clusters of the Magellanic
Clouds suggest a higher mass loss rate during or at the end of the
asymptotic giant branch phase than previously supposed. Recent
theoretical investigations offer an explanation for the frequency of
carbon stars in the Clouds.
