During magnetic activity, significant perturbations of the neutral gas composition are observed. Molecular diffusion is one of the mechanisms by which equilibrium conditions are restored. By the use of a simple one-dimensional numerical model, the time constants associated with this process are estimated. The following initial disturbance scenarios are considered: (1) turbulently-mixed topside atmosphere, (2) turbulently-mixed layer, and (3) wind-induced diffusion. In each case, the model results are compared with the commonly used estimate tau (D) = H-sq/D (H = scale height, D = diffusion coefficient). It is found that this estimate is rather crude and therefore of limited value. It is also found that the calculated helium recovery time constant is much large than actually observed. Therefore, vertical diffusion alone is not sufficient to explain the recovery of this constituent.
