A novel approach is presented for the reconstruction of the wave-distribution function on the basis of observed frequency spectra, without relying on cold-plasma theory. Numerical methods are used to solve the dispersion relation for waves in a warm, homogeneous, anisotropic, multicomponent plasma; this allows almost any linear wave mode to be treated, as well as warm plasma models. Doppler effects are taken into account, and the reconstruction is simultaneously performed over a wide frequency range. The maximum entropy method is used to define a solution to the inverse undetermined problem occurring in the reconstruction.
