To test statistically the validity of magnetic reconnection theory, a study of geomagnetic activity and of the plasma sheet dynamics during the solar cycle 1965 - 86 was carried out. It was found that during the thinning of the plasma sheet alone, the potential drop (Φ) across the plasma sheet, the power transferred (P) and the energy released (E) during the selected 44 substorm events were maximum. The dependence of Φ, P and E with Kp index and sunspot number were verified.
