Magnetic reconnection is the crucial process that controls the interaction between the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres and drives magnetospheric activity. The Earth's magnetosphere hence is the primary site for studies of magnetic reconnection in space. It also provides the major background and impetus for advancing the theory and simulations of collisionless reconnection. In this presentation I will discuss the specific reconnection sites and micro- and macroscopic properties and consequences of reconnection in the magnetosphere.
