Reconnection plays a critical role in many astrophysical processes. Solar observations give us some indication of how magnetic reconnection proceeds in astrophysical environments, but more generally the role of reconnection is inferred from uncertain evidence. Here I will discuss the role of reconnection in models of star formation, the interstellar medium, and the generation of large scale magnetic fields in the universe. The evidence indicates that reconnection is fast, much faster than expected from resistive models, under a wide range of conditions. At the same time there is some evidence from solar observations that reconnection can occur in bursts, with periods of inactivity. I will briefly discuss possible explanations for these observations, concentrating on the role of magnetic field line stochasticity.
