Recent recording of local earthquakes in southeastern Ghana has shown that almost all the activity occurs along the Akwapim fault zone, with little activity offshore. Evidence is presented that these events are typical of the historical pattern in which case the relative absence of activity offshore casts doubt on previous suggestions that the causative stress is due to continued movement along the Romanche fracture zone near the continental margin.
