X-ray microcalorimeters have made rapid progress in the last few years. Recent improvements in noise levels have pushed Transition Edge Sensor (TES) detectors close to their theoretical physical limits on energy resolution. New fabrication techniques are allowing for the production of close-packed arrays of detetors, and advances in superconducting electronics allow these detectors to be multiplexed. These accomplishments point towards the possibility of a large-format array of X-ray microcalorimeters with simultaneously high angular, spatial and temporal resolution. The current state of the art will be discussed, as well as future projects to produce such an instrument.
