Preliminary data on a high-resolution broad-band spectrometer designed
for application in high-energy X-ray astrophysics are presented. The
detector is based on an Nb superconducting tunneling junction operating
at a temperature of 1.6 K. The factors influencing the limiting
performance of this detector are studied in detail.
