Scientific paper

Recent work concerning the winter enhancement of D-region electron densities is reviewed with particular reference to the period 1974-1978. The topics covered include electron density distributions; ion production processes; neutral atmospheric effects due to trace constituents, temperature, and transport; ion composition and chemistry; and coupling among atmospheric and ionospheric layers. Some advances in the phenomenology of the winter anomaly are noted.
