Lewis (1965) has shown that an approximation space-time geometrical optics is insufficient for the asymptotic description of dispersion distortions of AM and FM signals in a smoothly stratified plasma, and that an approximation of space-time geometrical diffraction theory is required for this purpose. In the present paper, the latter approach is analyzed, showing that the signal envelope constitutes a complex nonmonotonic curve. The asymmetry of the leading and trailing fronts is attributed to asymmetric behavior of the marginal (X-ray) diffraction factor.
