Rare gas isotopic compositions were mass spectrometrically determined on the gases released during temperature release experiments on the carbonaceous chondrite Murchison, the mineral thucholite, and the four granite samples Carney Lake, Red Rock, Wausau, and Westerly. The variations in the isotopic composition of rare gases released at various extraction temperatures from meteorites were explained as due to the fact that there exist reservoirs of two isotopically distinct gases with mixtures of these gases being released at different temperatures. The major difference in the isotopic composition of solar and planetary gas was attributed to a mass dependent fractionation process.
