Spectroscopic observations of the peculiar Be star BD + 37 deg 1160, the possible optical counterpart of the hard X-ray source 1H 0521 + 373 are reported. The present data show rapidly variable Fe II and Balmer line emission. The presence of short time line variability (time scale not greater than 300 s) suggests that the origin of the phenomenon can be due to the presence of a compact companion.
