This paper contains an outline of an approximate transmittance model with parameters determined directly from the strengths and widths of the spectral lines within the passband of interest, without recourse to any fitting procedure. As an illustration of the method, approximate atmospheric transmittances are calculated over bandpasses within the A-band of oxygen. The approximate transmittances generally differ from the results of line-by-line calculations by less than 0.001.
