The primary advantages of 3D finite-difference time-domain codes involve the ability to examine polarization effects in detail; this allows modeling of realistic rock shapes. Representative 3D results are presented which show that they furnish a more fundamental basis for calculating cross sections both at Mars landing sites and elsewhere on planetary surfaces where rock populations are significant.
