Design and performance features, as well as intended applications, of a quadrupole sextuple beam-transport system (QSBTS) for producing a second beam of radioactive nuclei for cross-section studies are described. The QSBTS involves acceleration of a light heavy-ion beam toward a primary target. Reaction products are collected by a magnetic lens system, which focuses the particles as a secondary beam onto a secondary product, which produces particles that are sensed by a detector. Background effects can be accounted for by time-of-flight calculations. Precautionary measures to be considered when choosing a secondary target material for making proton-capture measurements are outlined, as are detector features such as Si surface barrier counters and delta-E counters. Tests with measurements of N-2(Be-7,B-8) cross-sections are detailed. The device is concluded useful for generating radionuclides for studying the CNO cycle in massive stars and assessing the sun's status.
