The paper is a survey of recent work on the theory of wave propagation in various natural waveguide structures. A unified mathematical point of view (the normal wave method) is presented for studying propagation in the superrefractive troposphere (short and VHF waves), the earth-ionosphere waveguide (VLF waves), and the ELF resonant cavity between the earth and the ionosphere (Schumann resonances).
