The effects of the coronal plasma on the telemetry carrier signals of the deep-space probes Pioneer 9, Mariner 9, and Pioneer 10 during their superior conjunctions with the sun were observed. The relationships of these effects to various solar features were investigated; a sequence of solar microwave observations was conducted to assist in the establishment of such relationships. The results were used to help evaluate the effects of the solar activity cycle on spacecraft communications. The prediction of the various coronal effects during future superior conjunctions of interplanetary spacecraft with the sun is discussed. Some elementary aspects of the theoretical interpretation of the experimental measurements in terms of the fundamental properties of the coronal plasma are considered.
