Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations of neutral hydrogen and continuum emission at 21 and 6 cm from the interacting system of galaxies NGC 4490/85 are presented. Observations reveal an extended H I distribution compared to the light distribution, with a ridge of H II extending from NGC 4490 towards NGC 4485 and corresponding to a chain of giant H II regions. Neutral hydrogen distributions and the radial velocities indicate that NGC 4490 has a warped H I disk. It is found that many of the features of the H I and H II distributions and kinematics can be explained by a gravitational encounter model, and the presence of a nonthermal source close to the optical center of NGC 4490 is confirmed. Thermal radio emission observed at 6 cm from nine giant H II complexes indicates a very high rate of star formation per unit mass, and the model of Larson and Tinsley (1978) of a recent burst of star formation is shown to provide an attractive alternative to the young galaxy hypothesis for NGC 4490/85.
