Scientific paper

Jansky's observation in 1931 of galactic noise emissions ignored at first by contemporary astronomers, contributed though, together with radar, to the science of radio astronomy. The paper traces the growth of this science from its beginnings to 1964, when the 3 K cosmic microwave background was discovered as a phenomenon which supports the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe. The paper also outlines the development of the telescope and the role it played in Hubble's findings on the expanding universe.
