The properties of a papuanite from New Guinea are analyzed in light of the possible tektite nature of these spherical green glass objects. Thermal and 14-MeV instrumental neutron activation analysis of a specimen from the Toregoro River reveal its chemical composition to be quite different from that of all known tektite groups, resembling most closely that of artificial glasses. It is thus concluded that despite similarities in specific gravity and appearance between papuanites and tektites, if objects such as the present specimen are the source of reports of tektites in New Guinea, then the existence of New Guinea tektites must be discounted.
