A numerical method for the solution of the radiative transfer equation in a circularly symmetric, cylindrical region is developed. The transfer equation is formulated as a second-order differential equation resulting in a set of tridiagonal difference equations. This form is particularly well suited to line formation and energy balance calculations using the complete linearization method. Several numerical examples are presented.
