The influence of longwave radiation on a single, isolated buoyant thermal is assessed. Separate, uncoupled estimates are made for characteristic convective and radiative cooling rates as a function of thermal size, both for condensed and uncondensed conditions. Application is made to the lower terrestrial troposphere, to a region near the Venus cloud tops, and to the upper troposphere of Mars.
