The peculiar conditions of the plasma filling the emission regions of the powerful continuum radiation from active galactic nuclei and quasars are discussed. The plasma is energized by gravitation; it is radiation dominated, out of thermal equilibrium, at least weakly relativistic, and it is likely to comprise a large number of positrons. Specific tenets of plasma physics are called into question.
