Using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate that in the propagating head of a bipolar shear Alfven wave (SAW), where large transverse gradients occur in the magnetic field and a large parallel current exists, strong electrostatic waves are generated including electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) and the whistler waves in the frequency band fLH < f < fpe, where fLH and fpe are the lower hybrid and plasma frequencies, respectively. In our simulations fpe = fce/3, where fce is the electron cyclotron frequency. The whistler waves propagate ahead of the SAW in conical structures with cone angles determined by the group velocity cone angles of the electrostatic whistler waves.
