Solar Flares: Hard X Rays, Solar Flares: Spectra

Scientific paper

Measurements of hard X-ray radiation, Xh, from 180 solar flares, carried out on board the spacecraft Venera-13, -14, were compared with measurements of optical and thermal X-ray radiation, XT. The total quantity of energy release during the burst in these bands was calculated, and a correlation analysis was conducted. The resulting correlation relationships give evidence that the total energy of the fast electrons responsible for the Xh-burst in the impulsive phase of the flare is related to the thermal energy at the end of the impulsive phase in a practically functional way. The quantitative relationship was determined between the importances of the flares in the Hα line and the most probable values of the energy content in the various bands of radiation, by means of computations grounded within the generally accepted models. It is evident that the total energy of the optical (cool) part of the flare, the energy of the radiation in the X-ray band, and the energy introduced into the flaring volume by energetic particles are comparable with one another.
