Solar Flares: Protons
Scientific paper
Solar flare observations made aboard the earth satellite Prognoz-8 on April 28, 30, and May 10, 1981 with power levels in the optical range not exceeding a scale value of 1B are used to determine the flux of protons with energies E ≥ 50 MeV and E ≥ 500 MeV. For these events electrons with an energy E = 0.2 - 2 MeV were recorded aboard the spacecraft ISEE-3. All flares were accompanied by type II and IV bursts in the meter range, long wave radio radiation, and other active phenomena at coronal altitudes. It is proposed that the high energy protons and electrons measured April 28 and 30 were captured in a magnetic trap formed by magnetic force lines and recorded at the time of passage of the satellite through extended magnetic structures in the vicinity of the earth. An estimate of the transverse dimensions of these structures is given.
