Consideration is given to the parametric interaction of longitudinal and transverse plasma waves in a system consisting of a relativistic electron beam in a molecular medium. A dispersion relation is obtained which describes parametric wave coupling between the various modes due to the presence of a strong electromagnetic pump wave. The analysis has implications for the free-electron generation of coherent radiation, and in astrophysical situations such as pulsar atmospheres.
