We investigate the cosmological character of five-dimensional (Kaluza-Klein type) solutions of the Einstein equations. We show that the vacuum solutions of these equations give rise to an effective radiation density connected with the existence of the extra dimension. We examine the connection between this case and the solutions obtained by assuming a five-dimensional radiation source.
