Irregularities associated with plasma instabilities in the equatorial electrojet are discussed; the use of radar monitoring of the irregularities in order to study ionospheric parameters in the equatorial E-layer is emphasized. Temperature, collision frequencies, density gradients, neutral winds and electrostatic fields may have relevance in understanding the phase velocity of the two-stream and the gradient drift or cross-field instabilities. An asymmetry observed in the east-west irregularities over South America is accorded particular attention.
